If Arne Slot would have had his way then Liverpool would have brought in Lutsharel Geertruida, his former Feyenoord captain, on loan on transfer deadline day in the winter window.
The Dutch international, who joined Sunderland on loan from Leipzig last summer, was up for cutting short his stay on Wearside and moving to Anfield, but the deal proved too tricky to conclude with the Mackems unable to bring in a replacement so late in the window.
Geertruida stayed put and has proven to be a useful squad member for Regis Le Bris’ side as they have maintained their safe spot in the Premier League during a fairly low key second half of the season.
Sunderland have an option to buy Geertruida permanently, but reports from Sky Sports in Germany claim they will not be triggering it and that Geertruida will return to Leipzig ahead of a ‘likely’ permanent summer move.
Will Liverpool go back in for the versatile defender, who also played in midfield for the Mackems at times this season? Let’s wait and see. But the Reds were certainly keen on him just a few months ago.
