A woman missed her own 50th birthday celebrations in Spain and was left almost £1,000 out of pocket thanks to a post-Brexit passport rule.
Ali Burridge, from Suffolk, had been due to fly to Benidorm with a group of 15 pals over the May bank holiday weekend to celebrate her milestone birthday.
She paid a total £900 for flights and accommodation as part of the trip which she had been looking forward to for years and had spent months planning.

However, when she arrived to check in at London’s Stanstead airport, she was given the devastating news her passport didn’t travel requirements.
She was told she would not be allowed to board the flight because, although it appeared valid, her passport was issued more than 10 years before the date of travel – breaching rules introduced after the UK left the EU.
Under current regulations, British passports must have been issued within the last 10 years on the day of entry to EU countries. Before Brexit, travellers could carry over up to nine months from a previous passport when renewing, Stoke-on-TrentLive reports.
This meant that some documents show expiry dates more than a decade after issue. That additional time is no longer recognised for travel to many European destinations.
Ali said she had renewed her passport under the old system and added she had “no idea” the extra months would invalidate it for EU travel.
“It was awful when I was told the news, to be honest, I’m still in shock,” Ali told the Sun. “I had been looking forward to this since my 40th birthday – we had spent the previous year organising it all. In reality, the rule has cost me money and memories.”
Her sister Tracey said the group were left “in tears” when they learned Ali would not be joining them, having travelled out on an earlier flight. Ali said no issues were flagged when she checked in online two weeks before departure, despite entering her passport expiry date.
“If it had flagged the issue, I would have been able to get a new one, which is annoying,” she said.
In a last-ditch attempt, she drove to try to secure an urgent passport appointment but was unable to obtain one in time. Instead, she spent her 50th birthday at home while her friends enjoyed the sunshine abroad – calling her on FaceTime so she could join in from afar.
“I still know and see a lot of people travelling on the old passport, so I want to raise awareness so this doesn’t happen to others,” she added. “You could easily be caught out like me if you don’t travel often. I’m seeing this situation as a valuable life lesson.”
