Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess has revealed that skipper George Williams will go in for neck surgery next week.
The England captain suffered the issue in defeat to Catalans Dragons, and scan results showed that he could miss the rest of the league season, depending on how he recovers.
Burgess has laid out the “best-case” scenario for Williams, and there is a slim chance he could make it back for the season’s end, however things would have to drop in the half-back’s favour.
“That gives us a start there [the surgery], the Warrington boss said to BBC Radio Merseyside. “The recovery, it’s not as simple as when the boys get shoulders or ankles done.
“There’s a bit more complexities around the neck, so I guess it’s minimum 12 weeks, and let’s say it’s minimum four weeks after that, so I’d say that would be the time frame at best case.
“Again, we’re not going to know until I’d say 8 or 10 weeks down the line, but I can say George is as healthy as he can be going into it, he looks almost healthy enough to play, so it’s not like he’s in pain or anything.
“It’s something that needs doing, he’s been good around the group, and I guess the surgery date gives us all a bit of, not closure but it gives us something to work from and we go from there.”

Warrington Wolves boss comments on Brodie Croft speculation
Williams will leave Warrington at the end of the season, as he heads to the NRL.
Wire have reportedly already set out his replacement, with Leeds’ Brodie Croft set to arrive at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
A move is far from confirmed, however reports from SARL’s sister site, Yorkshire Evening Post, say that Croft would be heading to the Primrose and Blue outfit, rejecting a new Leeds contract in the process.
Burgess was asked about a potential move for Croft, to which he revealed he was unaware of the speculation until he was told by the media in that press conference.
“He’s obviously a great player. I wasn’t actually aware of the speculation until speaking to you guys.
“He’s a wonderful player. We’ll just see what happens there.”
