“It is encouraging to see waiting lists coming down, emergency response times improving, and more people getting the care they need faster.”
The latest data shows 65.3 per cent of patients were treated within target waiting times, ahead of the 65 per cent goal.
Ambulance response times also improved, with crews reaching stroke and heart attack patients in 30 minutes and four seconds – the fastest in five years.
A&E performance rose to 77.1 per cent, also the highest in five years.
Mr Hayes said: “I thank NHS staff who go above and beyond for patients.
“There is more work to do, these figures show that the NHS is moving in the right direction and go further and faster.”
The NHS has balanced its books for the first time in nine years.
More than 2,000 additional GPs have been recruited.
