There are plans for a block of flats to be built behind a pub in the shadow of Gloucester Rugby’s Kingsholm Stadium.

Nathan Dangerfield wants permission to go ahead with the works at Kingsholm Inn in Kingsholm Road.

His proposals, which have been submitted to Gloucester City Council, include the construction of a two-storey detached building to provide three one bed flats.

They say the pub is heavily reliant on trade from home fixtures at the Kingsholm Stadium and trade is intermittent and has suffered significantly during Covid and Post-Covid Years.

The owner wishes to diversify his income so that the pub can remain open for business.

Consultants working on the scheme say the proposal presents a sustainable strategy for supporting the pub as well as making improvements to existing flats, fire strategy and the way they are serviced with bin and bike storage.

The proposed stair core and extension on the second floor addressing Sweetbriar Street would also be an opportunity to improve the street scene, they say.

They say the proposal makes a positive contribution to both economic & social circumstances and the built environment.

The ground floor of the public house would be altered to provide a new toilet and the existing six one bedroom flats would be extended.

The planning application also includes external changes to the rear of the building including new stairs.

The main purpose of the proposal is to provide layout, access and fire strategy improvements to existing flats or bedsits along with three new modern flats as well as improved bin store, cycle storage.

“The existing café use will remain unchanged at this time however if change of use is required in the future for uses such as a fast food takeaway this would be sought by separate application,” the consultants working on the scheme say.

“The scheme represents an opportunity to develop a scheme that enhances the built environment of the Kingsholm area of Gloucester while also aiming to provide a more financially sustainable situation for the site and public house.”
