Based on a true story, the film centres on Sergio, an inspirational teacher who arrives at a school in a border town rife with drug cartel violence. The school has one of the worst academic records in the whole of Mexico, funding for resources is being siphoned off by corrupt officials and the staff is unmotivated and despairing.
Sergio decides that only an unorthodox approach to teaching will have any chance of giving his students an opportunity of a brighter future.
After years working in Mexican television, director Christopher Zalla has created a film which won the audience favourite award at the prestigious Sundance festival and which has been released in 23 countries.
The screening will be preceded from about 7:30pm by the Society’s traditional end-of-season wine and nibbles. There will also be a sale (cash only) of dozens of DVD and Blu-ray discs, with many priced as low as 50p.
