Part of a main road could remain closed for up to two weeks while emergency repairs are carried out after a sewer tunnel collapsed.
Southern Water shut a section of Broadstairs Road in Broadstairs at 7pm following the discovery of a void during work by Kent County Council (KCC) highways crews.

Engineers found a small tunnel carrying a sewer beneath the road had collapsed.
The closure runs from St James’s Avenue to the junction with Edge End Road in both directions.
The damage is believed to be more than four metres below ground and repairs could take about a fortnight to complete.
A Southern Water spokesman said Dane Court Grammar School and The Charles Dickens School have been informed.
“We apologise for the traffic disruption this will cause but we must close a section of Broadstairs Road near Dane Court Grammar and Charles Dickens School,” they said.

“The closure may be in place for two weeks and a diversion put in place.
“During work by KCC, a void was found and we discovered that one of the small tunnels which our sewers run through in Thanet has collapsed.
“We’ll be working as quickly as is safe and possible to dig down and make the tunnel safe.
“We will keep customers and stakeholders updated on our progress.”
The spokesman added there will be no disruption to water supplies.
