Sam Burgess has admitted that the decision whether to renew his Warrington Wolves contract is a ‘big decision’, though he’s also clarified that he’s enjoying his time at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and believes he can progress the club further.
Burgess is in his third season at Warrington with the first-time head coach initially signing a two-year deal before extending to the end of the 2026 season, meaning questions about his future are understandably being asked.
His assistant Steve McNamara will leave Warrington at the end of the season with McNamara appointed as the Hull FC coach from 2027 onwards, and his impending exit makes Burgess all the more important to the Wolves.
BBC Radio Merseyside shared his pre-match presser ahead of Sunday’s game against Bradford Bulls, with Burgess asked about his own future within that press call.
“There’s nothing finalised,” the 37-year-old said.
“It’s a big decision because I’ve got a young family here and I’ve got some kids in Australia, so it’s a big decision and I’m going to put a lot of thought into that.”
One thing that Burgess made clear was just how much he was loving his time at the club with his vision for further progression, both on and off the field, something he spoke about.
“Like I said earlier, I think I’ve said I’m enjoying it,” Burgess explained.
“I really like the way we’re going as a club. We’re buying in to just continually trying to improve off the field, on the field, in the community, our work through the foundation. I really like where the club’s going so I want to be part of this transition period of the club.
“I really feel like I can take us where we need to be. There’s a lot of things going in the right direction and can’t see why it won’t end up that way.”
Tying down Burgess would be a massive coup for Warrington, who have recently signed Leeds Rhinos playmaker Brodie Croft for 2027 as their replacement for current Wolves’ captain George Williams.
