Luke Yates has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

And another player who didn’t feature in the 26-12 win against Bradford Bulls, Sam Stone, looks set for a sustained period on the sidelines.

While from Sunday’s game itself, Josh Thewlis left the field with a shoulder/neck injury that leaves a doubt over his availability when Wire return to action against Hull FC in 12 days’ time.

Head coach Sam Burgess said: “Josh is as tough as they come.

“He said he got it in the first collision of the game.

“He said he felt something in his neck but we’ll see how he goes over the next couple of weeks.

“He’ll get a scan but he’s a tough kid.”

Second-rower Stone was due to return to the side against Bradford but Burgess explained.

“He pulled his hamstring in training yesterday, well, the day before.

“He’s had a scan but we don’t know the results yet.

“He was moving too fast in training and pulled it.

“Hopefully it’s not a long absence but the signs are it may be four to six weeks, but I’m guessing.

“The way he reacted he’s going to be out for a little bit.

“I don’t like losing players at training but sometimes when they’re competing these things happen.”

Yates has been in and out of the side in recent times with a neck/shoulder injury.

Burgess revealed: “Yatesy unfortunately will be gone for the year as the result of his scan came back which is unfortunate for him and the group.

“He’s going to have to have a similar procedure to George Williams in his neck.

“It’s disappointing for Yatesy because it’s not only his presence on the field, he’s a great leader as well among the group and he’s well respected.

“I thought Luke Thomas (who started in place of Yates) was awesome and played the first 40 minutes in the middle which was unbelievable.

“Not once has he let the team down, he’s always at the game. When one thing falls over another’s got to stand up and in that case it was Luke Thomas.”

Burgess added: “Yatesy is a bit down, naturally, he put in a lot of effort over the off season and getting the group to where it needs to be in standards, on and off the field.

“He’s a heavy influence on the group so he’s naturally disappointed but we’ve got to get on with it.”

There is some positive news.

Burgess said: “Over the next month or so we’ll see a few back.

“I’m not so sure straight after the break but maybe a week or two after we’ll start to see Cai Taylor-Wray and James Harrison, maybe Arron Lindop as well who’s starting to look good in training.”

And Burgess sounded optimistic that skipper Williams will feature again this season, despite his neck surgery earlier in the week.

“You’ll see George again,” he said.

“If I was a betting man, we’ll see George again at some point.

“He’s got a great will and determination.

“He doesn’t give up easy. He’s a good chance of getting back at the back end.”
