There are plenty of films to look forward to on the big screen this June, and our experts have selected ten of the biggest and best to add to your watchlist.

From the British acting royalty Richard E Grant and Claire Foy in a dark comedy and Steven Spielberg’s return to the science fiction summer blockbuster to He-Man on the big screen, the long-awaited Toy Story 5 from Pixar and a romantic comedy with Jennifer Lopez among the choices — it’s fair to say there’s something for everyone.

Here are the top ten films coming to cinema screens in June.

Masters of the Universe

The muscle-bound hero is back. Nicholas Galitzine is stepping into the warrior’s boots to play He-Man for this attempt to bring the toy franchise to the big screen. In this film we will find out how “the most powerful man in the Universe” got his powers. After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam back to Eternia, where he discovers his world is shattered under the rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). Now he must save all those he loves. Camila Mendes and Idris Elba also star.

Scary Movie

The sixth instalment of this popular parody film series is finally arriving after a 13-year break. Known for its humorous spoofs of horror films and pop culture, the American franchise has grossed more than $900 million at the box office. Fortunately for the film-makers, the hiatus has coincided with a surge in horror films to satirise. The new movie is expected to parody a range of recent hits, including M3GAN, Get Out, Smile, The Substance, A Quiet Place and, naturally, Sinners.

Savage House

Richard E Grant and Claire Foy are teaming up for this darkly comic drama set in 18th-century England against the backdrop of the Jacobite uprising and a huge pox outbreak. They are Sir Chauncey Savage and Lady Savage, a social climber and his wife, who are on a mission to do anything they can to get ahead. Expect some razor-sharp comedy and even better outfits, as this pair navigate love, power and betrayal.

Madfabulous

The It’s a Sin star Callum Scott Howells leads the cast of this comedy drama, inspired by a true story, about the life of Henry Cyril Paget, the 5th Marquess of Anglesey, who set out to claim his aristocratic inheritance at the end of the 19th century, but his eccentricity when he arrives in north Wales sends shockwaves around the area. The British peer, dubbed “the dancing marquess”, was known for wearing voluminous robes, cross-dressing and for his untimely death aged 29. Rupert Everett and Siobhán McSweeney also star.

Office Romance

In this raunchy and buzzy rom-com, Jennifer Lopez is Jackie Cruz, a strict airline chief executive who breaks her own no-dating policy when an ambitious lawyer, Daniel Blanchflower (Brett Goldstein), shows up. They try to keep the relationship professional, but they just can’t help themselves, naturally. The rom-com has been penned by Goldstein and Joe Kelly and directed by Ol Parker (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again). It promises to be a fun watch.

Disclosure Day

This is a biggie. Steven Spielberg is returning to sci-fi for a big summer blockbuster. Based on a screenplay by David Koepp, who previously worked with the director on Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the film is still shrouded in mystery and the trailer has told us very little. The synopsis reads: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people.” Starring Emily Blunt, Colin Firth and Josh O’Connor, this is undeniably one of this year’s must-watch movies.

Toy Story 5

Buzz and Woody are back together for the latest instalment in Pixar’s beloved franchise. This time the toys are taking on a new threat in Bonnie’s bedroom: a tablet called Lilypad (Greta Lee) whose fun outside masks an addictive core. Can the gang work out a way to banish this scary tech? New toys in the gang include a toilet trainer, Smarty Pants (Conan O’Brien), a hippo voiced by Craig Robinson, and a digital camera called Snappy.

Virginia Woolf’s Night & Day

For those in search of a period drama, you may want to book tickets for this film inspired by a Virginia Woolf novel. Described as an “unromantic comedy”, it is set at the dawn of the 20th century, a time of significant scientific progress and the women’s suffrage movement. The story centres on Katharine Hilbery (Haley Bennett), a young woman determined to avoid marriage so she can pursue her true passion: astronomy. The film boasts an impressive cast, including Lily Allen, Jennifer Saunders, Timothy Spall, Jack Whitehall and Sally Phillips.

Supergirl

Last year’s Superman movie ended by teasing a brand-new hero: Supergirl. OK, she’s not actually new — she has racked up more than 140 on-screen appearances by now — but the cameo of Milly Alcock (of House of the Dragon fame) promises a fresh look at the character. Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya), this film sees the disillusioned hero celebrating her 23rd birthday in space. However, her cosmic celebration is interrupted when a young alien arrives, intent on avenging her father’s murder, launching the heroine on an interplanetary mission.

Jackass: Best and Last

In January Johnny Knoxville announced that he can’t do any more stunts that could lead to a concussion because he got a broken rib, a concussion and a brain haemorrhage during a stunt with a bull in the movie Jackass Forever. Fear not, anarchy will still very much be on the menu from Knoxville, Steve-O and the gang as they take on their final series of stunts that also promise cameo appearances from Brad Pitt and Tory Belleci.
