In an attempt to entice new players, Marathon will be totally free to play for a full week on PS5, starting from the 2nd June and lasting until the 9th June.
This lines up with the launch of the previously announced Season 2, which is introducing a new map and shell (character class), alongside various seasonal challenges.
Gear progression is being reset for all players as well — so newcomers shouldn’t feel like they’re up against impossible odds right from the off.
There’s also mention of smaller improvements to the overall experience. Bungie lists “increased faction progression speed, a larger Vault, improvements to some of the more frustrating contracts, and more quality-of-life changes to help you on your climb.”
In fact, going by the above video, it sounds like character progression has received a pretty major overhaul.
To be clear, the Marathon ‘Open Play Week’ is going to be available to everyone on Sony’s current-gen console. You don’t need a PS Plus subscription to participate, and if you end up enjoying yourself, you can carry your Season 2 progress into the full game.
