So, who did it better… Jonas Vingegaard this May, or his big rival Tadej Pogacar two years ago? Let’s look at the basic stats…

Winning margin: 5’22” vs 9’56”

Days in pink: 7 vs 19
Conclusions: Pogacar’s win was more emphatic and it no doubt came from his killer instinct and love of racing. The Slovenian went into pink on day two where a punchy finish was enough to coax him out of the pack and attack. Vingegaard, by contrast, waited until the seventh stage to Blockhaus before making his move.
Unlike Vingegaard, Pogacar won a time trial, but unlike Vingegaard, he didn’t win all of the summit finishes: Georg Steinhauser won on the Passo del Brocon. As for the winning margin, Pogacar pulverised his opposition, winning by almost 10 minutes, with the top 10 spread by over 21 minutes. The top 10 this year is spread by just under 13 minutes.
In short, Pogacar couldn’t resist dominating the Giro that he won, whereas Vingegaard has shown stellar form, but has ridden perhaps with one eye on July… which bodes well for when these two riders go head to head at the Tour de France.
