Danill Medvedev had been one of tennis’ most consistent players for the better part of the last decade.

During that time he has captured 20 titles, one of which is the 2021 US Open title, which he claimed by beating Novak Djokovic in the final.

In 2022, Medvedev became the 27th man to become the world number one, and he held the position for 16 weeks in total.

But throughout the 2025 season, the Russian has suffered more defeats earlier in tournaments, and he has not won a championship since 2023.

In 2025 Daniil Medvedev reached one final, which came on the grass at the Halle Open.

The 29-year-old lost to Alexander Bublik in Germany, and the closest he has come to reaching another final was making the last four at Indian Wells.

One of the most alarming things about Medvedev’s season is his performances at the Grand Slams, where he has just one match win, which came against Kasidit Samrej at the Australian Open.

Medvedev lost to Adam Walton at the Cincinnati Open on Sunday, which marked his fourth opening-round defeat of the season.

As the tennis world discusses Medvedev’s shock dip in form, 2023 US Open winner Andy Roddick took his ‘Served’ podcast to share what he thinks Medvedev is trying to do to address his level of play.

“There is no way around the results. We can explain away the circumstances, I love to tell you why it’s hard and why it’s not as simple as it’s made out to be and it’s just not the same package of results that we are used to from Daniil Medvedev.

“When you have a cat and mouse game, that is reliant on going to work, there are no easy solutions for Daniil Medvedev. Is he someone who all of a sudden is going to start serving and volleying? No.

“Is he someone who needs to extend points and take someone’s legs out and has that process when he is at his best? Absolutely.

“So I’m not sure what the quick fix is. Now we are at an inflection point. Is this the new normal or are we just dealing with an episode of confidence, and maybe some adjustments?

“We don’t know, bet against the greats at your own peril. So the biggest point I want to make is that he is serially underappreciated for what he has done in the game and two is that he is searching for something right now.”

The life of a tennis player can be filled with plenty of highs but also many lows.

For the first time since becoming a top player, Medvedev’s usual methods to win matches are not as effective as before and players appear to have less fear when they face him.

After losing at the Citi Open in Washington D.C, Medvedev told the ATP Website that he is working hard with his team on identifying the areas of his game of improvement.

“It’s very tough in tennis, because I could find 10 reasons and I would not know which one is the main reason,” Medvedev said about his results of late.

“Whatever we do, we just try to improve. So we sat down with the team: Where can we do things better? What can we change? We discussed some things and I’m going to try and implement it.

“This is the most exciting part of the season, there is hard courts until Miami next year. So I will try to give my best and enjoy it.

“It’s an opportunity, I want to take it as a challenge of trying to raise my level in the big occasions, trying to go step by step.”
