Competitors who took part in the 112-mile Dunwich Dynamo have lambasted the defect on Ballingdon Hill in Sudbury following the race last month.
Nick Timms, a retired policeman from Leicestershire, was thrown from his bicycle midway through the race after hitting it, suffering soft tissue injuries, a swollen kneecap and cuts to his face and leg.

Tim Regester, ward member for Sudbury North West (Image: Babergh District Council) Mr Timms said he was made “really angry” after learning from Tim Regester, ward member for Sudbury North West at Babergh District Council, that he had reported the pothole last year.
“I thought that could have been mended,” said Mr Timms, who was unable to complete the race.
“It’s amazing how many people hit that pothole that night. Luckily it threw me to the left. If it was to the right it would be into oncoming traffic.
“If a cyclist hit that in the day and went into the oncoming traffic, we would be looking at a fatality.”
Mr Timms has put in a claim to Suffolk County Council to reclaim the cost of the damages to his bicycle, which totalled £480.
A spokesperson for Suffolk Highways said: “We are sorry to hear about the reported incident and wish the individual a quick recovery.
“As the matter is subject to an outstanding claim, we are unable to comment on specifics, however we will continue to monitor the location through our regular inspections and in line with our safety policy.”

The Sudbury councillor said he had reported the pothole through the Suffolk Highways reporting tool, while another councillor had also reported twice previously.
He believes that “hundreds” of cyclists may have suffered damage from the pothole on the night of the race.
The pothole in question has been reported six times since the race, according to the highways reporting tool.
One report read: “Cycling at speed it was almost impossible to avoid and when hitting it my front light snapped clean off.”
