Gill Hurcomb, 82, has volunteered for 18 years at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) by supporting patients through Look Good Feel Better sessions at the Macmillan Wellbeing and Support Centre.

These sessions, run by trained beauticians, help cancer patients manage the visible side effects of treatment such as hair loss and skin changes, aiming to improve confidence and emotional wellbeing.

Ms Hurcomb, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2006, began volunteering at the centre in 2008 after receiving treatment at the QEH and wanting to give something back.

She said: “Patients often tell me they don’t feel like themselves anymore.

“When your hair falls out or your skin changes, it can really knock your confidence.

“Knowing what the sessions involve, and having someone there who understands from experience, can make a big difference.”

Ms Hurcomb now also helps run the centre’s monthly Grab a Cuppa group, creating a supportive space where patients can share experiences.
