After we saw The Chemical Brothers’ Go also re-emerge within the main singles standings, most recently breaking the Top 5 thanks to Netflix action-thriller film Apex, let’s explore why Katy’s ballad has rediscovered its popularity.

Why is Katy Perry’s The One That Got Away back in the Official Singles Chart?

Over the past few months, the song has became part of a viral TikTok trend in which users list their Top 5 ‘horror movie moments’ from their past, with the song acting as the soundtrack. It’s also been used in videos in which users reflect on some of the more nostalgic moments of their lives.

As a result, the song’s been used in millions of clips worldwide. Katy even got involved herself, posting multiple videos on social media using the song, including reacting to the news that her ex-boyfriend Josh Groban was getting married.

Coinciding with this, Perry released an extended director’s cut of the track’s music video, which includes new scenes as well as narration from Fleetwood Mac icon, Stevie Nicks.

The song’s experienced more attention following the release of Katy’s new compilation record, The Ones That Got The Plays, in May. The record has peaked at Number 12 on the Official Albums Chart so far.

Released as a track on her third studio album Teenage Dream, it was officially released as the album’s sixth and final single on September 30 2011.
