The cast of Patience, a drama which tells the story of a young woman with autism who works for ‘City of York Police’, has promised an ‘action-packed’ third season after speaking to The Press amid recent filming in York.

The upcoming series is expected to air in January 2027 on Channel 4 for an extended run of ten episodes – with writing split between season one creator, Pocklington’s Matt Baker, and season two’s Amy Shindler and Beth Chalmers.

Filming got underway last week with camera crews seen across the city, with returning cast members set to include Ella Maisy Purvis (Patience Evans), Jessica Hynes (DI Frankie Monroe) Nathan Welsh (Jake Hunter), Tom Lewis (Elliot Scott), Adrian Rawlins (Douglas Gilmour), Liza Sadovy (Loretta Parsons), Ali Ariaie (Will Akbari) and Hannah Tointon (Joy).

Among them, BAFTA-winning actor Jessica Hynes was seen filming under Skeldergate Bridge last Thursday afternoon and Ella Maisy Purvis was spotted in front of York Minster.

A scene between Nathan Welsh, who plays DS Jake Hunter, and Hannah Tointon, who is starring as Patience’s sister Joy, was also filmed on a City Cruises boat on Monday (June 1) – with the cast revealing that romance is set to blossom between the pair and that the scene will feature within the season finale.

Patience’s relationship with Joy is also set to be explored in the series. Actor Ella Maisy Purvis said: “Immediately, you see the fallout of what happens and they’re put in very close proximity to each other, so we see how Patience deals with that change.”

Hannah Tointon added: “I sort of come into your life quite full on – I move in with you and cause havoc. There’s no stone left unturned really with Joy. By the end of the series, they come to a nice balance.”

The cast added that the third series is set to be more “action-packed” than ever before – especially for Hynes’ Monroe and Welsh’s Jake – with murders set on an aeroplane, a hotel swimming pool, a prison, and a haunted house.

On Tuesday, the cast gathered at York Museum Gardens around the Grade II* listed Hospitium to shoot a scene which sees Jessica Hynes’ DI Frankie Monroe dealing with amnesia, after waking up beside a dead body following a car crash.

As well as new crimes, the next series is also set to be star-studded with guest stars including acting legend Geraldine James, BAFTA-nominated Jane Asher, and even TV naturist Chris Packham – who is set to feature in an episode about chess.

“He’s [Chris] never a murder suspect, but he’s briefly considered. We’re so lucky this season as all the actors who are coming to guest are a stellar line-up,” said Jessica.

Tom Lewis, who plays Elliot Scott said that he also believes that this season is set to be the funniest one so far – adding “the humour gets more intense each series”.

Ella Maisy Purvis added: “I think we’ve established a really strong working relationship in series two and that just kind of carries on. They have respect for each other in the way that they work and there’s not much clashing – they sort of trust each other now.

“We’ve got a really dynamic team of very different people that work together on arguably more exciting and personal cases.”
