A man in his 50s is in a serious condition in hospital after being shot with a crossbow at a University of Surrey accommodation site.
Surrey Police said a 21-year-old Saudi national – a former student at the university – has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody.
Officers were called to Manor Park Student Village, Guildford, at around 10am on Thursday.
The University of Surrey said a member of its campus safety team was seriously injured in the incident.
Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen, of Surrey Police, said the suspect was detained shortly after the incident.
A “significant emergency services presence” remains in place, and access to the Royal Surrey County Hospital is unaffected, the force added.
In a statement, Ch Supt Jon Groenen said: “I appreciate that this incident will cause concern amongst our local communities, and I can reassure that we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident. We are working closely with the university as our investigation progresses.
“The suspect was detained at the scene shortly after the incident and an investigation is now underway to establish the circumstances of the assault.”
He added that the victim’s next of kin has been informed and is being supported by officers.
