A huge fire sparked a major emergency response at a recycling plant on Thursday. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called Recycling Centre in Neath Abbey Wharf in the early hours of the morning following reports that a fire had erupted at the site.
Around 150 tonnes of recyclable waste had gone up in flames, causing smoke plumes to be visible from the site. At the height of the fire, orange and yellow flames were captured.
Fire services from across Wales joined the effort to extinguish the fire and crews left the scene by 5.30pm.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: “Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called to a fire at a Recycling Centre in Neath Abbey Wharf at 5.30am on Thursday, June 4.
“Crews responded to a significant fire involving a large quantity of waste material, measuring approximately 75 metres by 40 metres and estimated to contain around 150 tonnes of recyclable waste.
“At the height of the incident, multiple appliances attended from across the Service, including support from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. Firefighters used 12 breathing apparatus sets, alongside two ground monitors and two main jets, to bring the fire under control.
“The incident required a sustained operational response throughout the day, with a stop message received at 5.27pm.”
The incident was one of two fires requiring a major emergency response in the area on Thursday. Crews from across south Wales and England had been tackling a massive fire at the Tata Steel site in Port Talbot from around 8pm on Wednesday evening.
