Staff and students at a Trafford school are mourning the loss of another of a beloved teacher, less than two months after their head died in a crash.
Stretford Grammar School announced on Friday (June 5) that the curriculum lead for maths, Chris McAvoy, had sadly died at the age of 57.
“He was not only a deeply respected member of our staff and wider school community, but a cherished personal friend to so many of us,” the school said in a Facebook post.

In a moving tribute, the school said Mr McAvoy was a ‘passionate’ teacher and ‘pillar of the community’, with ‘barely a day’s teaching missed’ over his 25-year tenure and ‘the first to volunteer whenever we needed help in school’.
“He was a passionate teacher who truly loved his subject and took immense pride in seeing the achievement of his students,” the school added.
“He was the consummate professional, with a real sense of moral purpose in the way he lead the Maths Department, with his colleagues not only respecting him as their line manager but also knowing Chris as a dear friend who always remembered birthdays and looked after them professionally and personally.
“A keen walker and runner, Chris loved the outdoors. He also appreciated the finer things in life and travelled miles in search of the perfect artisan real ale or a local Beer Festival.”
The school has not said how Mr McAvoy passed away.

Acting head Liz Baxter said his loss would leave ‘a profound absence’ at the school and described him as a ‘kind and thoughtful gentleman whose legacy will live on through the generations of students he taught’.
“We are deeply saddened by his untimely passing. He will be sorely missed by his students, his colleagues, his friends, and his family, especially his sister, Laura. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
The heartbreaking news comes less than two months after the death of the school’s headteacher Michael Mullins in a crash in in Partington while cycling home from work.
Simon Richardson, 35, of no fixed address, had been charged with murder; manslaughter; dangerous driving; failing to stop; and driving without insurance following the incident on April 20.
