The Chancellor was mocked over the video on social media, with one user saying: “This may be the most desperate claim ever made.”
Steph Morgan, a retired police officer, wrote: “Honestly, this woman. When Labour obtained power the economy was beginning to recover and the country was on the up. Back then she talked the country down and wrongly described a £22bn black hole. Now, having taken the economy into a death spiral, she is trying to talk it up!”
In October, Ms Reeves was accused of “dodging big issues” after discussing Beyoncé’s hits in a “cringey” clip on Instagram.
Ms Reeves has repeatedly insisted she has the “right economic plan” for Britain, citing the IMF’s recent upgrade to its growth forecast as evidence that the country was on the right track.
However, the organisation also suggested that the “domestic uncertainty” of a Labour leadership election risked further hurting growth and investment.
While it was broadly supportive of the Chancellor’s economic plan, it warned that the UK had “limited space” to raise taxes further.
