The latest stage marks progress at Lynfield Mount Hospital in Bradford, part of a multi-year project by Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust to transform its central building into a modern mental health facility.

Therese Patten, chief executive of the trust, said: “This is a really exciting milestone for the Trust and our ambitious plans to deliver a facility that better supports the recovery and wellbeing of our people who use our services.

“The upgraded facilities will significantly enhance the experience of our patients and will help them to return to their communities as soon as they are able.

“The modernised spaces will also create a better working environment for our colleagues, supporting the Trust’s ambition of being the best place to work.”

The redevelopment, which is being carried out over three years in a phased approach, will allow hospital services to continue operating throughout construction.

The first phase focused on enabling works such as creating a new staff car park, a woodland wellbeing walkway, temporarily relocating the main entrance and demolishing the former Estates and Facilities offices.

Phase two will deliver a new two-storey, two-ward block with full en-suite facilities and upgraded communal spaces in the central building.

To mark the start of this phase, a small celebration was held at the hospital for those involved in the project.

Ms Patten said: “Breaking ground on phase two of the redevelopment is the culmination of years of planning, commitment and support and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved with and supportive of the project so far.”

In March 2026, the trust signed a contract with McAvoy, a leading manufacturer of modular buildings in the UK and Ireland.

Modular construction involves building sections offsite in a factory, which are then transported to the hospital and assembled.

This approach reduces disruption to both services and neighbouring residents compared to traditional construction methods.

Martin O’Neill, contracts director at McAvoy, said: “We are proud to mark the groundbreaking of this important redevelopment and to be helping deliver modern mental health facilities for the people who use Lynfield Mount Hospital’s services.

“Our offsite manufacturing approach directly supports the delivery of flexible, healthcare accommodation, while maintaining high standards of quality and minimising disruption on site.

“We look forward to working closely with the Trust to help create an environment that supports patients, staff and the long-term future of the estate.”

Phase two is expected to be completed by autumn 2027, after which phase three will begin.

The entire programme is scheduled for completion in early 2029.

Karin Smyth, minister of state for health, said: “It’s fantastic to see work underway at Lynfield Mount Hospital – a major step forward for mental health services in Bradford, supported by £65 million of government investment.

“High-quality, modern facilities are essential to supporting recovery, and this new development will provide patients with a safe environment alongside improved spaces for the staff who care for them.

“This investment reflects our commitment to strengthening mental health services and ensuring they are fit for the future.

“There is more to do, but projects like Lynfield Mount show the real progress being made for patients, staff, and local communities.”
