Given the circumstances, it’s easy to forgive Adam Svensson his moment of madness. But we can’t imagine he got much sleep on Monday night.
There was a stacked field looking to book one of the six spots available at the qualifier at Lambton Golf & Country Club – around an hour from TPC Toronto, where this week’s RBC Canadian Open will be held.
It was a good day for South Americans, with the Argentine pair of Emiliano Grillo and Alejandro Tosti, as well as Colombian Marcelo Rozo, punching their tickets to Shinnecock Hills.
Behind them, though, a host of star names – eight, to be precise – were forced into a playoff for the three remaining spots.
At the first extra hole, William Mouw made birdie to take the first, with bogeys for Max Homa and Patrick Fishburn seeing them eliminated.
On the second, a John Parry birdie saw him through, while his fellow Englishman Jordan Smith made bogey to fall out.
That left Svensson, Max McGreevy and Matt Wallace in a three-man battle for the final spot.
At the third extra hole, McGreevy holed a birdie putt to take the sixth and final place, and with Matt Wallace already in for par, Svensson, who was yet to hole out, scooped up his ball marker thinking it was done and dusted.
Only it wasn’t.
Because Svensson and Wallace were meant to continue playing to decide who was first alternate for the US Open – which is almost guaranteed a place in the field.
In picking up his coin, Svensson effectively conceded the first alternate spot to Wallace, and the Canadian will now have to sweat as a second alternate.

Svensson, whose US Open record to date reads T60-T56, could yet get in. But he’ll have to do something he hasn’t done since 2022 – win a PGA Tour event.
