Sony is “exploring new ways” to deliver PS Plus Extra additions in its biggest territories: the US, UK, and Japan.
The latest Game Catalogue update will roll out globally on 16th June as usual, but in the abovementioned territories, only select titles will be available on that day.
That means you’ll get access to Sonic X Shadow Generations today but will have to wait until 30th June for Blades of Fire.
The schedule looks like this:
10th June
11th June
16th June
23rd June
30th June
Sony didn’t explain the reasoning behind the change, but I suspect it’s all to do with increasing engagement and user activity. If the new releases are spread out throughout the month, it increases the chance you’ll come back weekly to see what’s new.
It’s interesting to see it only apply this change to select regions, and I suspect that’s because it wants to collect feedback and monitor data.
Obviously there are advantages here – select territories get access to the Sonic Generations remake sooner, as mentioned – but it seems a bit unfair to force fans to wait for other releases. I’d like to try Blades of Fire, for example, but will have to wait two weeks longer than the rest of the world.
