The coach of Kent Men’s Amateur Golf champion Haiden Matos expects plenty more success for the 17-year-old.
Dartford Golf Club’s Matos won the senior event at the first time of asking with a teriffic display of skill and mettle, particularly in his come-from-behind semi-final clash against Knole Park’s James Norris at Littlestone. And his coach, Keiran Poole, says the teenager is just getting started.

“Haiden’s victory is the result of years of dedication, hard work and a genuine passion for improvement,” Poole said.
“I’ve had the privilege of coaching him for over 12 years and throughout that time he has consistently shown the qualities needed to succeed at the highest level.
“What makes this achievement particularly special is how much the Kent Amateur Championship meant to him. Having previously won the Kent Boys’ Championship, one of his major goals this season was to add the Kent Amateur title to his list of achievements.
“He was incredibly focused on that objective throughout the winter and early part of the season, and it was clear how determined he was to test himself against the very best players in the county.”
“Winning the Kent Amateur Championship the first time I played in the event was an incredible feeling,” Matos said.
“Going into the tournament, I was excited to play against a strong field, but coming away as the champion is brilliant. It’s rewarding to see all the hard work I had put into my game pay off.”
Talent alone, as many golfers have shown, is not enough to reach the top but Poole has no worries on that score.
“What makes Haiden special is not just his talent, but his work ethic, professionalism and willingness to learn,” he added.
“He has won multiple events, earned a scholarship to the United States, represented England under-18s, played for Kent men’s first team and captained the Kent under-18 side, all while remaining grounded, respectful and a pleasure to work with.
“The last few years at Kent Golf College have been particularly important in his development. The environment has helped him continue to grow technically, physically and mentally, enabling him to compete successfully at national and international level.
“More importantly, Haiden is an outstanding young man. He represents Kent Golf, his club, his family and himself with tremendous professionalism. This Kent Amateur Championship is thoroughly deserved and I have no doubt there are many more successes to come in his golfing career.
“While this is a significant milestone, knowing Haiden, he will already be looking ahead to the next challenge and continuing his journey towards competing at the highest level of the game.”
Naturally, Matos’ loved ones are delighted with his county triumph.
”The family are immensely proud of Haiden,” said dad Luis. “What he has achieved so early in his golfing journey is a testament to his hard work and determination.
“Winning at this level against such a talented field is incredibly tough, but to do it on his first attempt is very special.”
