This is one of the world’s most interconnected Tier IP Networks.
Kenyan internet infrastructure and service provider, Rain Communications Limited, has launched enhanced IP transit services out of Mombasa through a direct upstream interconnection with Cogent Communications. This is one of the world’s most interconnected Tier IP Networks.
From this development, Rain’s customers will be able to access high-performance, ultra-low-latency global internet capacity via Cogent’s expansive backbone, while remaining locally serviced. Speaking on this partnership, Barry Macharia, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Rain, said that the direct connection to Cogent enables the company to deliver global reach and resilience for clients operating in East Africa, right from the coast of Mombasa.
Though Cogent does not have a point-of-presence (PoP) in Kenya, Rain has established a direct upstream link with Cogent via Teraco JB1 in Johannesburg, enabling seamless traffic flow into Cogent’s global backbone. Through this setup, Rain functions as a direct peer to Cogent in Kenya, giving local clients privileged access to one of the world’s most efficient internet ecosystems.
“Our partnership with Cogent marks a significant step forward for internet infrastructure in Kenya,” noted Alex Nyagah, Managing Director of Rain Communications Limited. “We are thrilled to offer clients across East Africa access to scalable, affordable, and ultra-low-latency IP transit, right from the coast of Mombasa.”
“Rain’s interconnection with Cogent allows its customers to benefit from direct access to a world-class IP network,” said Mark Harris, Vice President of Sales at Cogent Communications. “We’re proud to support Rain’s growth and the region’s accelerating demand for high-quality transit.”
The services are delivered from Rain’s infrastructure hosted at iColo Mombasa, a strategic, carrier-neutral data facility. This ensures efficient, low-latency access to the Cogent backbone while keeping operations local, compliant, and cost-effective.
This launch marks a new chapter in Rain Communications Limited’s mission to bridge global internet access with East Africa’s evolving digital demands, enabling faster, more reliable, and more affordable internet services from the region to the world.
