The experienced defensive midfielder spent the second half of the Championship campaign on loan at Carrow Road, making 15 appearances in all competitions and is now set to become a full-time member of Philippe Clement’s squad.

As first reported by West London Sport, it’s understood the clubs have agreed a deal worth just above £1.5m, with potential bonuses based on promotion to the Premier League taking it to a maximum of £2.8m. That agreement will see Field swap Loftus Road for Norfolk on a full-time basis. He will offer depth and competition for starting duo Kenny McLean and Pelle Mattsson.

There was no buy option as part of the loan deal agreed on deadline day, but the clubs have thrashed out terms with the midfielder making clear his desire to return to Carrow Road.

The midfielder will now complete a medical with a view to becoming the Canaries second summer signing after Brazilian defender Bruno Alves completed a loan move from Cruzeiro with an option to convert it into a permanent deal for £1.7m.

Field, 28, fell out favour under QPR boss Julien, requesting to leave the club in January in pursuit of regular minutes.

Norwich swooped for Field on deadline day after Mattsson suffered an injury. His experience and reliability were key to helping City climb the Championship table in the Dane’s absence.

City boss Clement confirmed that they would be interested in bringing Field back to the club on a permanent basis after being impressed by his character.

“We took Sam in for a certain role. He did that brilliantly, even better than we expected,” said head coach Clement, speaking at Colney last month. “We had a talk also with him and we will see what the next weeks and months will bring around him, what his chances or opportunities are with other clubs, what QPR thinks, but he will be somebody we will keep an eye on to see what is the best choice for our midfield next season.

“He can be in that discussion, it needs to be at the right price, of course, so we will see the next weeks and months how this situation evolves.

“When you make any decisions around the squad it’s always the sporting and financial considerations combined.

“That will be the same in the summer transfer window, especially when clubs in the Championship know what the situation is likely to be with financial fair play. That will have consequences for clubs on what you can do, or what positions, or how you can divide the money you have to spend.”
