Wade Metcalfe wears two prosthetic legs, after losing both due to complications from his Type 1 diabetes, but it has not slowed him down on the course.

And his remarkable hole-in-one, via his trusty 9-wood, on the 18th at Branshaw Golf Club has delighted the community, with people on social media and in the streets queuing up to congratulate him.

People have ‘stopped me’ in the street

Mr Metcalfe spoke to us after Branshaw Golf Club put us in touch with him.

He told the T&A: “It’s a feeling you don’t forget.

“I’ve been stopped in Keighley with people congratulating me since it happened.

“I’ve hit the flag three times on the second hole before, but I’ve been trying to get that first hole in one for years and that 9-wood is just what I use on the 18th.”

‘It was my lifeline after I first had my legs removed’

Mr Metcalfe spoke emotionally about Branshaw Golf Club, where he has been a member for six years and where he plays four times a week.

He said: “It’s my only form of keeping my mental health stable and the course is only round the corner from me, so that’s a good thing.

“It was my lifeline after I first had my legs removed, after being housebound for around eight months.

“To get out and just see good people on the course means a lot.

“I go up with my best mate and I’ve got a good group of friends up there.”

Mr Metcalfe was remarkably candid about the reasoning behind losing his legs, saying: “I’m Type 1 diabetic and I’ve had that condition since birth.

“I’ve abused it, so this is payback.”

But Mr Metcalfe said that with somewhat of a chuckle and he was upbeat when speaking to the T&A about his achievement.

He was asked whether he hoped this hole-in-one could inspire other amputees or those with disabilities, who may have felt sporting achievements were beyond them.

Mr Metcalfe responded: “Yeah, it shows there’s still stuff out there.

“Like I say, it’s my way of getting out and making my mental health stable again.”

And Mr Metcalfe has since received a lovely message from Keighley Golf Club’s Lady Captain Bea Hopwood, inviting him and two others to come and play there free of charge.
