Jockey Of The Week: Comebacking Tyler Gaffalione Wins Four Stakes On Sunday At Ellis Park originally appeared on Paulick Report.

Tyler Gaffalione resumed riding on July 19 at Ellis Park after being sidelined for four months recovering from a broken ankle sustained at Gulfstream Park. He won five of his first seven mounts. That was just the beginning of his comeback, however, as he continues to ride in top form while based for the first time at the Kentucky track. On Sunday, he won four of the six stakes races on the card to cap a week of 10 wins and leading rider status.

The panel of racing experts voted Gaffalione Jockey of the Week for Aug. 4 to Aug. 10.

The weekly honor recognizes jockeys for significant riding accomplishments and who are members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 1050 active, retired, and permanently disabled jockeys in the U.S.

Gaffalione posted four wins on Friday, beginning with the third race with Cervaro Della Sala for trainer Anna Meah, the sixth race for Brendan Walsh aboard Infiltrate, Army Officer for Brad Cox in race 9, and Alpha Omega in race 10 for Peter Eurton, completing the late double.

Gaffalione travelled to Colonial Downs to ride on Saturday but was back at Ellis on Sunday for their 10-race card and his six-win day. He won the second race on Mister Mmmmm for trainer Joe Sharp and the third race for trainer Christopher Davis aboard Zeus’s Echo.

Trainer Eddie Kenneally then gave a leg up to Gaffalione aboard heavy favorite Comport in the Ellis Park Juvenile. Breaking from post position five, Comport raced just off pace setter Spice Runner. Rounding the far turn, Comport stuck his head in front and went on to post a 2-length win in 1:22.73 for seven furlongs.

Gaffalione piloted Tumbaruma to a neck win for trainer Brian Lynch in the R.A. “Cowboy” Jones. Off as the even-money favorite, Tumbarumba raced in fourth through the backstretch and far turn, then dug in gamely to outfinish Prince of Power for the win in 1:35.38 for one mile.

Riding again for Brian Lynch, Gaffalione was aboard Big Truzz in the Ellis Park Derby, posting an impressive 7-length win over five rivals in 1:34:73 for one mile.

Trainer Will Walden engaged Gaffalione to ride Sturgeon Moon in the day’s final stakes, the Audubon Oaks. With a patient, ground-saving ride under the hot hand of Gaffalione, Sturgeon Moon posted a 3-length win in 1:23.08 for seven furlongs.

“I love Kentucky racing, it’s a blast here,” said Gaffalione to Ellis Park publicity after the win.

Gaffalione will head west to ride at Del Mar on Thursday and Friday, then return to Ellis Park.

Other contenders for Jockey of the Week included Junior Alvarado, who won the Grade 1 Arlington Million, Javier Castellano with a win in the Beverly D (G2), Juan J. Hernandez, who had a six-win day at Del Mar on Saturday, including three graded stakes; and Flavien Prat, who won the Sword Dancer (G1).
