23 big names playing in Open Final Qualifying

Several major champions and Ryder Cup players are among the big names competing at Open Final Qualifying.

The 154th edition of golf’s oldest major at Royal Birkdale is almost upon us, which can only mean one thing. It’s time for Open Final Qualifying.

Each year, Final Qualifying is held across four premier links venues across the UK – with Burnham & Berrow, Dundonald, Royal Cinque Ports, and West Lancashire on the current rota.

Players who made it through Regional Qualifying and those able to bypass that first stage compete over 36 holes on a single day for a minimum of 16 spots available in The Open. Typically, the four lowest scorers at each venue make it through.

Final Qualifying has long attracted notable players who had not yet qualified for the final major of the season, but the fields have upped in quality since the rise of LIV Golf. Many recognized players on the breakaway league have had fewer opportunities to qualify for the biggest tournaments, but their presence at Final Qualifying adds to a fascinating spectacle on one of golf’s longest days.

This year, several household names are teeing it up across the four venues, including major champions, Ryder Cup stars, surprise entries and – in at least one case – all three.
