Iranian fans are
watching Austria v Algeria anxiously.
If
there is a winner in that game, Iran will qualify for the knockout stage with three points from their three draws. But if Austria and Algeria draw, Iran will
be eliminated.
There
is also a historical echo here. The reason final group games are now played
simultaneously goes back to the infamous 1982 match between West Germany and
Austria, the result of which eliminated Algeria after both European sides knew what
they needed to go through.
