Alan Price, a resident at Iverley View Care Home, has played golf since he was seven or eight, inspired by his parents.
His father represented Staffordshire and his mother soon developed her own love of the sport, setting a family tradition that shaped Alan’s life.
By nine he was playing at Warley Woods Golf Club, later moving to Halesowen Golf Club at 16, where he progressed from nine to 18 holes and went on to represent Worcestershire’s First Team in his early twenties.
He also captained the county Second Team.
When Alan moved into Iverley View, staff were determined his favourite pastime would continue.
They recently organised a special trip to a local driving range, where Alan picked up a club again and showed he had lost none of his natural talent, delighting staff and fellow residents with his swing and enthusiasm.
Now the team has set a new goal – to get Alan back onto a full golf course.
Home Services Advisor Louise Kinsella said: “Seeing the joy on his face when he returned to the driving range was incredibly special.
“Our next mission is to help Alan get back onto a golf course and create even more wonderful memories.”
Staff say Alan’s story underlines the importance of helping residents keep up lifelong hobbies and interests.
Iverley View Care Home, run by Barchester Healthcare, provides residential and dementia care for up to 55 residents, from respite and post-operative care to longer-term stays.
