Some great news for those of us rooting for more weird, uncomfortable indie horror movies. Zach Cregger’s Weapons is outperforming expectations at the box office. Wait, you already knew that? Oh right, because everybody that still thinks all horror movies are just Jason Takes Manhattan is absolutely dumbfounded when a horror movie does well and thus makes a big deal out of it. But hold on, the box office numbers aren’t just the weekend ind that you hear folks talking about.
No, I’m talking about a case of the Mondays, which for Weapons, is apparently a good thing.
According to Deadline, Weapons raked in $5.2M at the box office on Monday, August 11, which means it now holds the record for best horror movie Monday in August in the history of cinema, beating out The Sixth Sense’s $4.35M and Annabelle: Creation’s $3.6M, which now move to the second and third spaces in this category, respectively.Â
Winding the clocks back to Mondays past, we also see in this data that Weapons’ week-beginning numbers outperform some of the most impressive horror showings of recent memory. From 2017’s Get Out to this year’s 28 Years Later to Gen Z blockbuster Five Nights at Freddy’s, the post-weekend dropoff had more of an effect than it’s having on the Barbarian team’s latest venture into the horror genre. That said, Weapons impressive Monday numbers still fall short of arguably the horror movie of the year – Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which saw its first Monday rack up $7.8M.
A sight better than Jason Takes Manhattan, is what I’m saying.
Weapons is in theaters now.
