Maldon District Council has alerted families and dog walkers to adder sightings at Orchard Meadows in Southminster and is putting up information signs across the site.
In a public notice, the council said adders – the UK’s only venomous snake – had recently been spotted at Orchard Meadows, off Southfield Way, and reminded visitors the species is legally protected.
The snakes are described as usually shy and keen to avoid people, but officials warned they may bite if they feel threatened or disturbed.
Walkers are being asked to keep children under close supervision, keep dogs on leads and ensure pets remain under control while using the meadows.
The council is also advising visitors to stay alert, stick to marked paths where possible and give any snake they see plenty of space, moving away calmly rather than trying to interfere.
If a person or pet is bitten, the advice is to seek immediate medical or veterinary help, as prompt treatment is considered important even though bites are uncommon.
Orchard Meadows, which comprises a series of hedged meadows and an old orchard with play equipment and walking routes, is recognised locally as a wildlife-rich green space.
The council said it was sharing the guidance to help everyone enjoy the area safely while respecting the protected species and wider nature on the site.
