Pádraig Harrington fired a third-round 66 at Scioto Country Club to get himself into the last group for the final round of the US Seniors Open heading into Sunday.
The Dubliner is looking to become just the second player ever to win three US Senior Open titles.
Harrington had two bogeys on his card, one on the fourth hole and then a closing bogey on the difficult par-four 18th hole.
Those dropped shot merely bookended a superb round that featured six birdies in a blistering run from the sixth to 14th holes that saw the Dubliner eventually sign for his four-under-par total, leaving him on eight-under-par overall.
That leaves the three-time Senior major champion one behnd leader Stewart Cink of America ahead of the tournament’s final 18 holes.
Harrington, the defending champion who of course also won three major titles on the ‘regular’ tour, is bidding to snare his third US Senior Open having also won the event in 2022.
Last year, he held off Cink by one shot at the Boadmoor in Colorado Springs.
Cink’s stunning third-round 64 leaves him in the driver’s seat while Harrington’s fellow Irishman, Darren Clarke, also carded a wonderful 64 of his own to jump into the top five, albeit six shots off the lead.
Royal Portrush man Chris Devlin is also faring well, his third-round 71 leaves him on 11-under-par overall, good enough to have him in a tie for 11th heading into Sunday.
Harrington, Cink and George McNeill begin their final round at 1.45pm Irish time on Sunday.
