A woman is currently fighting for life in hospital after a crash in North Tyneside today. A police investigation has been launched after a pedestrian was seriously injured in a collision on Sunday morning.
At about 9.15am police received a report from the ambulance service about a collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle on Benton Lane in the Longbenton area. It was reported that a grey Renault Clio car was travelling southbound towards the traffic lights at the junction with Goathland Avenue and West Farm Avenue when, for reasons yet to be established, they have struck a female pedestrian in the road.
Emergency services attended and the woman, who is in her 60s, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment of serious injuries. She remains there in a critical condition and her next of kin have been informed.

The driver of the Clio involved remained at the scene and continues to assist officers with enquiries. A section of the road was closed for three hours but has since reopened. The Great North Air Ambulance Service was also in attendance.
Officers from Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit have launched an investigation to determine the full circumstances – and have appealed for witnesses to come forward. They are especially keen to hear from anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident itself, or the moments leading up to the collision.
