Jon Rahm looked forward to the Genesis Scottish Open and playing against a “world-class” field after his disappointment in the recent US Open.
The Spanish-born golfer (pictured) feels his game is in good shape going into the 72-hole event at The Renaissance Club near North Berwick and has put a lapse during the second round of the US Open behind him.
That lapse meant he missed the cut zone on plus six and the 31-year-old admitted that mistakes he made were entirely down to him.
They cost him dear at Shinnecock Hills but the former Arizona State University student confirmed he will not work on anything specific in practice before the action starts on Thursday.
Many of the shots the former world No 1 will play here in East Lothian will be “situation based” he said and he descried the East Lothian course as being similar to what he remembers on his previous visit.
He had only played the back nine holes on the par-71 course before appearing before the media and added: “It (the course) looks a lot healthier (than it was on his last visit) and with more and more events it will get better.”
Playing links golf was an ideal way of preparing for The Open and he added: “That is why so many come to the Scottish Open.”
Rahm admitted that he has never played nearby courses like Muirfield, North Berwick and Gullane, something he would like to do long-term, but, asked about the strong field at The Renaissance, he said: “You are playing with a world-class field.”
Winning here on Scottish soil would be “something special” remembering where golf comes from and joining the list of big names who have won here.
