Cllr Jo Bird said she was pleased to see the public adapting quickly to the new scheme, which began rolling out in Wirral yesterday (July 6).
The initiative is being introduced in three phases as part of a nationwide bid to improve recycling efficiency, with further rollouts to follow on July 27 and August 17.
Cllr Bird also praised Biffa for using food recycling wagons run on low-carbon vegetable oil.
She said: “From today, thousands of households in Wirral can start recycling food waste.
“It was good to see some of the 75 bin wagons at Biffa’s depot in Bromborough Pool, where over 270 workers are based.
“These food recycling wagons run on low carbon hydrogenated vegetable oil, not high pollution diesel.
“It’s great to see so many people who live on the Wirral quickly embracing food waste recycling.
“Our precious planet has limited resources. Its essential to recycle as much as we can.”
Residents can find out when the new weekly service begins in their area using Wirral Council’s online bin collection calendars.
Ahead of each phase, homes will receive a kitchen caddy, a larger outdoor caddy, a starter roll of liners, and an information leaflet free of charge.
