Jersey should support its economy “rather than other countries” by supplying its shops with local products, according to the organisation that works to protect the provenance of home produced goods.
Genuine Jersey has been running for 25 years, has more than 200 producers providing products such as art, dairy and skin care.
Head John Garton said people buying Genuine Jersey marked products were “supporting our economy [and] supporting people who live and work here”.
“It recycles the local pound, it reduces our carbon footprint, it helps people to eat seasonally so then when the mark is on fresh produce, clearly it’s been grown locally and it’s in season,” he said.
As well as exporting globally the not-for-profit organisation wants to focus on reducing reliance on imports to feed islanders.
“We want to start to focus now on feeding our own people, a bit more food security, farming in a regenerative way that is good soil health, good food nutrient, good gut health, good mental health,” Garton said.
