Wiltshire Council will launch the pilot scheme at six of its Household Recycling Centres (HRCs).

The system will require residents to book a 30-minute slot before visiting.

Bookings can be made from September 8, with the scheme coming into effect on September 14.

Paul Sample, cabinet member for environment, climate and waste at Wiltshire Council, said: “We want our household recycling centres to provide the best possible experience for residents.

“By managing demand more effectively, we expect to reduce queues, make visits more convenient and lessen the impact on surrounding communities and local businesses.

“The pilot is about improving how the service operates, but the service itself is not changing.

“Residents will still be able to dispose of the same types of waste, opening hours will remain the same and any existing permit requirements will continue to apply.

“We’ll be promoting the new system over the coming months and encourage residents to find out more and plan ahead before the pilot begins in September.”

The booking pilot also aims to reduce disruption for nearby businesses and communities.

Bookings can be made up to one week in advance, with some same-day appointments available.

The council encourages use of the online booking system, though residents without internet access can call the council’s rubbish and recycling line for support.

Opening hours at the Salisbury centre will not be affected by the change.

During the current summer schedule, which runs from April 1, the centre is open from 9am to 4pm, Friday to Wednesday, and closed on Thursdays.

From November 1, winter hours apply with the site open from 10am to 4pm, Friday to Wednesday, and closed on Thursdays and Fridays.

Wiltshire Council has recently made short-notice changes to opening hours during periods of extreme heat, advising residents to check the council website or social media channels before travelling.

The booking system forms part of a wider effort by the council to improve customer experience while maintaining current service levels.

No changes are planned to waste types accepted or permit requirements.

HRCs in Devizes, Lower Compton, Melksham, Purton, and Stanton St Quintin will also take part in the booking pilot.
