A man has been taken to hospital after being struck over the head with a “bar or stick” during a fight outside a Liverpool city centre pub. Merseyside Police was called to reports of the incident outside The Blarney Stone pub on Renshaw Street at around 8.40pm on Friday, July 24.
The victim, a man in his 40s, suffered head injuries and was taken to hospital for assessment. When the ECHO arrived at the scene, a cordon had been put in place outside The Blaney Stone pub, stretching to Upper Newington Street.
The pub appeared to be closed, with three police cars parked outside. One man, who was having a drink in the pub next door, said: “I believe it was some sort of scuffle. But it’s scary when you see all the police tape, it looks really serious.”
The cordon remains at the scene following the incident while officers carried out enquiries.

Detectives are also examining CCTV opportunities in the area as part of the investigation.
Detective Inspector Joh Holden said: “It is completely unacceptable for anyone to be subjected to such a violent assault, and for people enjoying a Friday evening in our city centre to have to witness an incident of this nature.
“We know Renshaw Street would have been busy with people at 8.40pm and we appeal to anyone we have not yet spoken to who may have seen any part of this incident to contact us.
“If you were a motorist passing at the time and may have captured dashcam footage of the incident, or anyone involved, we are also keen to hear from you.
“You may hold evidence – however small it may seem – that could prove crucial to our enquiries as we work to establish what exactly happened and who was involved.”
