Meet the modest Cotswolds cricket side comprising plumbers, tree surgeons and students – who have established a T20 world record score of 417.
Dumbleton Cricket Club, competing in Division One of the West of England Premier League (WEPL), have rewritten history after delivering the most extraordinary scorecard ever witnessed in the short format.
They amassed 417-2 across their 20 overs, surpassing the previous record established in India in 2017 by a single run.
The squad, which also includes heating engineers, tree surgeons, joiners and property managers, remain astonished after their remarkable achievement of the highest total since T20’s introduction in 2003.
Overall, Dumbleton struck 47 sixes and 22 fours, totalling an impressive 69 boundaries from 120 deliveries. They surrendered merely two wickets while maintaining an extraordinary run rate of 20.85 per over.

The side revisited their picturesque lakeside ground this week, the venue of semi-professional sport’s most remarkable feats, to contemplate their world record-breaking performance.
The innings’ highlight came from Ewan Gegg, who hammered an unbeaten 206 off just 55 balls, reaching his century in only 30 deliveries before accelerating from 100 to 200 in a further 24 balls.
His knock featured 23 sixes and 13 fours, while other significant contributions came from Dan Holland, who smashed 122 from 37 balls, and Thomas Kelly who contributed 64 from 25.
Ewan said: “It has blown up a bit since and I’ve had texts and calls from as far away as New Zealand. People can’t quite believe it and it went a bit viral.
“We knew it was a high score but did some digging and found out it was a world record.”
The previous highest on record was a T20 game in India in 2017 where Maavi finished on 416-2.
Last September, England amassed 304-2 – a record total in a T20 International between two Test nations – in their win against South Africa, while the highest total recorded in a professional game was 349-5 set by Indian side Baroda in 2024.
Dumbleton’s opponents were Hatherley & Reddings CC, who are currently top of WEPL Division 2. They responded with an impressive total of 229, including 109 from Harry Bloomfield, meaning the match produced 646 runs in just 39.1 overs.
The eventual winning margin for the official Varistha T20 league fixture was 188 runs.
Ewan added: “There wasn’t really much of a gameplan to be fair. We said at the start we just wanted to win to get a home quarter final.
“We just told each other let’s start nice and positively and we just kept going throughout the innings and what happened happened.”
Ewan revealed they sensed something extraordinary was unfolding after the six-over powerplay, having already racked up 118 runs.
He added: “That never happens at that point so we thought we would get a good score. But we never thought we would get anywhere near what we ended up with.
“We thought maybe 300 – but 417 – just wow. It was a bit of luck and a bit of skill. You’ve got to get a bit of fortune to achieve this – but cricket is such a bizarre game sometimes. To get a score like that in a T20 is just insane. We got off to a good start and just kept going.”
Fellow centurion Dan Holland revealed he watched in astonishment as the two openers blazed away, simply attempting to maintain the rapid scoring rate.
He added: “I was padded up for a while watching Ewan smashing it around with our other opener TK (Thomas Kelly) – not thinking I would get too much of a bat.
“Living up to their start when they were 100 off six overs I felt was going to be quite difficult.
“We couldn’t believe what was happening. We’ve been involved in some high scoring games where we’ve got 400 off 50 overs – but to do it in 20 is unheard of.
“We were just trying to hit every ball for six. There was not a lot of speaking out in the crease between us. But there was some laughing about what was going on. It was crazy.”

The Gloucestershire club, established in 1885 and playing at one of England’s most picturesque cricket venues, is now awaiting official confirmation of its T20 record status.
Ewan added: “We are getting it finalised – but it according to all the records we’ve beaten the highest team score by one run that was done in India.
“We hope the record will stay for a long time. There is always a possibility it could get beaten. I would image the team before us that got 416 thought it would never get beaten but anything is possible. For our sake hopefully it never gets beaten but we will enjoy it while we can.”
Club spokesperson Pete Boorman said the entire crowd was left speechless by what they had just witnessed.
He added: “No-one has been able to throw at us a higher one and we have gone through records to validate all scores across the country and the world.
“So far no one has been able to come up with a higher score in men’s T20 game. It would be lovely to have it officially ratified. The previous highest on record is 416 from a game in India.
“We could go to Guinness World Records to have it officially recognised. We didn’t know how close we were at the time, but just tried to get as many as we could.
“It was a bonkers game. Ewan was just smashing everything from the start. No matter what they threw at him he just kept hitting boundaries.
“I’ve genuinely never seen a game like it. It was just utterly ludicrous. It was bizarre seeing it all unfold. The ball just kept disappearing to the boundary.
“I think our previous high score was around 220 for a T20 game. To get more than 400 is genuinely extraordinary. It was completely out of the blue.”
The combined match aggregate of 646 runs between both sides also appears to surpass previously documented records.
