*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Ransom Canyon season 2.*

Release date/status: Not yet renewed

Channel/Streaming service: Netflix

Netflix’s soapy western drama has released its second season, leaving Ellie and Yancy torn apart, Kai waiting in the wings and a patch of mystery Fuller Ranch land that may or may not be sitting on oil.

Naturally, fans want to know whether Ransom Canyon, adapted from Jodi Thomas’s novels, will ride again for a third run.

Season 2 leaned into a lighter, grift-driven story after Marianly Tejada’s real-life pregnancy reshaped Ellie Estevez’s arc, according to showrunner April Blair, while Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) and Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly) finally settled into being what Blair calls “endgame“.

But will Ransom Canyon return for more? Read on for everything we know so far.

As things stand, Ransom Canyon has not been renewed for a third season.

Netflix are yet to make a decision, with viewing figures for season 2 still being assessed. Seeing as the new second season has just landed, we can imagine that it won’t be too long before we know a definitive answer on the future of the series.

There is encouraging news for fans, however. In an interview with Deadline, Blair has confirmed a writers’ room is active and mapping out a possible season 3, so creative development is under way even without a formal order.

Blair has also said she would like a speedier time jump between seasons 2 and 3 than the six-month gap that separated the first two runs, so that the show can “see all the fallout” of the season 2 finale.

When could a potential Ransom Canyon season 3 return?

Because a renewal has not yet been confirmed and season 2 only recently dropped, any timing talk is speculative right now.

While we’d assume we’d be looking at a possible late 2027 or 2028 window should Netflix greenlight the show and production timelines hold, these are hypothetical rather than official dates.

No cast has been formally confirmed while the show awaits renewal, but Blair has flagged several characters she expects to bring back if a third season goes ahead.

The cast we’d expect to return for a potential third season are as follows:

Josh Duhamel as Staten KirklandMinka Kelly as Quinn O’GradyLizzy Greene as Lauren BrigmanMarianly Tejada as Ellie EstevezJack Schumacher as Yancy GreyGarrett Wareing as Lucas RussellTatanka Means as Jake LongbowCasey W Johnson as Kit RussellJennifer Ens as AshleyBrett Cullen as Senator Samuel “Sam” KirklandNiko Guardado as Tim O’GradyPhilip Winchester as Sheriff Dan BrigmanJustin Johnson Cortez as KaiKenneth Miller as FreddiePatricia Clarkson as Claire O’GradySteve Howey as LeviHeidi Engerman as SidneyBen Robson as Oliver

Blair has already said that Johnson’s Kit Russell will return if season 3 gets greenlit, after he was upped to a series regular ahead of season 2. Steve Howey joined the season 2 cast as Levi, Staten’s half-brother but it turns out that he’s someone whom Blair would not rule out using again “judiciously” when it means something.

Engerman’s Sidney was also a focal point of season 2 but Blair has hinted that “she may make another appearance”. As for Regan’s Mary Lou, Blair has also said that she “definitely plays a role in a potential Season 3” as the music festival and Lone Star Theatre rebuild continue.

Blair has also spoken about expanding the world further, saying she would like to introduce Lucas and Kit’s father and Staten’s mother in future episodes, though those additions remain ideas rather than confirmed casting.

“[There will] definitely [be] new faces,” Blair exclusively told Us. “I definitely want to learn more about Lucas and Kit’s parents. I feel like we’ve never really talked about that.”

What could happen in Ransom Canyon season 3?

The season 2 finale set up several threads. Ellie has asked Yancy to leave, unwilling to risk her daughter’s safety, while Kai’s presence offers her a choice between “the guy that she feels safe” with and “the guy who makes her weak in the knees”, as Blair puts it.

Yancy, meanwhile, is chasing redemption. Blair says his goal is to “win his family back”, and the mystery of what lies beneath Cap Fuller’s seemingly worthless land, possibly oil, could send him down a fresh rabbit hole. Blair has promised there will be no more cons after the season 2 grift.

Elsewhere, Staten and Quinn look solid heading into any third run, having healed rifts with their respective parents, though Blair warns of new challenges in “making a life with someone”. For Lucas Russell (Garrett Wareing) and Lauren Brigman (Lizzy Greene), Blair envisions a “bad boy era” for Lucas as the pair mature toward what she sees as their own eventual “endgame”.

Blair has been candid that season 3 remains a possibility rather than a certainty, telling Deadline: “It’s a potential Season 3 right now, but the idea is that Lucas is hurt.”

She also teased that the porch stand-off between Kai Flores (Justin Johnson Cortez) and Yancy Grey (Jack Schumacher) is “the beginning of a new story”, setting up a fresh love triangle for Ellie.
