Lizet Dingemans’ painting is among just 51 works selected for the 2026 Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award, currently on display at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
Her oil painting of professional artists’ model Mark Turner was chosen from nearly 1,500 entries submitted by artists across 63 countries.
Ms Dingemans said: “Mark is a fantastic model.
“He has a wonderful, calm presence in the studio that really lends itself to portraiture.
“Being selected for the Portrait Award is a huge achievement to me.
“It’s probably the most prestigious exhibition you can be part of as a portrait painter, so I’m thrilled to have my work hanging at the National Portrait Gallery.”
Now in its 44th year, the Portrait Award is considered one of the most respected platforms for contemporary portrait painting worldwide.
Ms Dingemans trained at the Angel Academy of Art in Florence and the London Atelier of Representational Art.
She now serves as head tutor at Raw Umber Studios in Stroud.
Her work has earned multiple awards from the Royal Society of British Artists and is part of the permanent collection at the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona.
Other career highlights include being commissioned in 2024 to produce a painting for Amazon Prime Video’s Young Sherlock series and winning the 2025 Gordon Hulson Prize for draftsmanship from the Royal British Artists.
Her previous exhibitions span the UK, including the Mall Galleries in London, Beverley Art Gallery, and 9 Duke Street, London.
Ms Dingemans’ portrait, along with the other selected works, is on display at the National Portrait Gallery until October 7.
The exhibition will then tour to Derby Museum and Art Gallery and The Arc in Winchester until June 2027.
Entry to the show is free.
Ms Dingemans has been a regular contributor to A&I magazines since 2016.
She has also featured in a range of publications, including The Gallery Guide, Art Rabbit, Fad Magazine, Wall Street Magazine and London Magazine.
She appeared on Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year in 2018.
