Thierry Gale struck a late equaliser after Bolton had been trailing from Ched Evans’ goal for most of the second half.
Schumacher felt it was a valuable test against direct opponents, particularly for the younger members of his squad.
“A good test, a good pre-season game for us, something different,” he said after the final whistle.
“Obviously, coming up against a team, the first one of the pre-season schedule who have been quite direct and we had to deal with balls coming into the box and second balls, so loads for us to learn.
“Something to take from it straight away; we’ve got to start both halves better. They go on to the front foot in the first 15 seconds.
“They got a foul, a free kick and a chance to put the ball into your box, so you don’t want to do that too often.
“Then they get on top at the start of the second half, so we need to learn from that and start the games properly.”
Schumacher made eight changes from the draw against Everton at the Toughsheet Stadium several days prior.
“You’ve got to get everybody up to a level playing field, that was one of the reasons behind a lot of the changes from Saturday,” the head coach added.
“We need to get people up to play the same sort of minutes and keep the load equal because you don’t know who you’re going to need to start on the opening day.
“We’ve seen everybody play, everybody’s getting stronger. There’s still a lot to improve on, technically still a few errors in there, new lads still gelling and whatever. But again, it’s pre-season. It’s to be expected, it’s only game number four.”
Gale came off the bench to score the equaliser and the substitutes, in general, had a positive impact after the break.
“I thought we finished the game strong,” said Schumacher. “Apart from the first five minutes of the first half and the first five minutes of the second half, where we were just a bit sloppy, I thought we controlled the game pretty much.
“In the last 25 minutes, we looked quite dangerous. We got into some really good areas and had some chances that we probably should have scored from.
“But pleased not to lose the game, even though the results are not important (in friendlies). We don’t want to be picking up defeats. We finished the game strong, which is important.”
Chris Forino was absent from the squad with a groin issue, but Schumacher played down any injury concerns.
“He did the open training session yesterday and after the session, he just said he felt a little bit of fatigue in his groin, so he was left out,” the boss explained.
“Ben Davies was in the squad tonight and I was potentially going to put him on, but I thought it was a good test for the two young boys, Lewis and Sam, dealing with two centre-forwards and direct play.
“So we just left them on and let them see out the 90 minutes. Davies has done some extra work with the fitness coach, but Chris is fine. He’s OK.”
