The much-debated 2028 PGA Tour schedule is already starting to take shape. Here’s what we know so far…
The decision makers in Ponte Vedra Beach are wasting no time on getting to grips with what the 2028 PGA Tour schedule will look like.
In June, the Tour’s new CEO and commissioner Brian Rolapp announced six seismic changes that included the introduction of promotion and relegation, a switch to a match play postseason, and the return to some of the game’s most iconic venues.
Most importantly, though, was the schedule.
As part of the plans, the PGA Tour will be split into two levels – the Championship Series and Challenger Series.
Still working titles, the top tier would feature up to 24 events between February and August and include the majors and the Players Championship – as well as the Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup in the September.
Each of these events outside the four majors and the Sawgrass showpiece would have 120-player fields with $20 million purses and all would feature a halfway cut, while the Challenger Series events will be 144-player fields playing for a $4 million purse.
And we now know the first three events of the 2028 Championship Series schedule, with the PGA Tour confirming that The Sentry and Travelers Championship and will be part of its top tier moving forward.
Sentry will take over from Farmers Insurance for the PGA Tour’s regular early-season stop at Torrey Pines. The software company had been a long-time sponsor of what was previously known as the Tournament of Champions, which kicked off the year in Hawaii, but was dropped from the schedule.
Traditionally known as the San Diego Open, the iconic Torrey Pines has been a PGA Tour mainstay since 1952, as well as hosting the US Open in 2008 – when Tiger Woods famously won with a broken leg – and again in 2021, when Jon Rahm broke his major duck. The Sentry, at its new home, will begin next season before becoming part of the Championship Series in 2028.
The Travelers, which is held at TPC River Highlands, is currently a PGA Tour Signature Event.
The third, though, is still to be decided – but we do know the headline sponsor. After a year away, the PGA Tour will return to Silverado in Napa, California, for the Sompo Championship. That tournament will then move to a new venue – expected to be in Seattle, Washington – as part of the Championship Series.
