He will be joined by Ewan McGregor, who played Renton, as well as screenwriter John Hodge.
The event will bring together actors, filmmakers and fans to celebrate the legacy of the 1996 film, which became one of Scotland’s most internationally recognised productions.
Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh, producer Andrew Macdonald, production designer Kave Quinn and costume designer Rachael Fleming will also attend the anniversary event.
The screening forms part of a wider EIFF 2026 programme featuring premieres, industry events and special appearances.
This year’s festival will run from August 13 to August 19.
International guests attending premieres and special events include Domhnall Gleeson, Alan Cumming, Ashley Benson, John Hannah, Radha Mitchell, Tom Courtenay, Stacy Martin, Darren Emerson and Fionn Whitehead.
Previously announced guests include Christine Vachon, Kenneth Branagh, Bruce Dern, Ken Burns, Prano Bailey-Bond and Marc Turtletaub.
The festival’s Midnight Madness strand will showcase genre films and special guests, including Chee Keong Cheung presenting Bad Day at the Office alongside stars Radha Mitchell and John Hannah.
Director Nick Nevern and cast members Tamer Hassan, Leo Gregory and Vanessa Bauer will attend for Rise of the Footsoldier: Retribution, while Grace Gallagher and Cameron Wright will appear for Abandoned.
Founded in 1947, the Edinburgh International Film Festival is the world’s oldest continually running film festival.
Following changes after the 2023 edition, a new organisation was created to lead a refreshed EIFF from 2024 onwards.
Paul Ridd was appointed festival director in December 2023, with the team aiming to create a major showcase for independent film and emerging filmmaking talent.
