Many runners take things a little easier and cut back on the miles when they’re on holiday. But this wasn’t the case for American rapper and our new-favourite running convert Wiz Khalifa, who used a recent vacation as a chance to cement his love of the sport, having only just taken it up.

‘Started running recently and i love it,’ posted the ‘Black and Yellow’ singer on Instagram, with images showing him clad, coincidently, in black Nike running shorts and yellow Nike Vomero 18 running shoes. Very on brand.

‘Went on vacation and all i did was run,’ he added. ‘5 miles on Sunday and 3 miles the day before that.’

He even posted his workout insights from the five miler, which indicates someone who is already partial to a bit of running nerdery. (Stats aren’t everything, but we’re here for it.) Khalifa ran 5.12 miles – just a mile short of 10K – in 49:26, at an average pace of 9:39 min/mile (6:00 min/km). If he held that pace for a full 10K, he’d clock a time of an hour, almost exactly. Considering the average 10K finish time for runners in the UK is 58:08, that’s not bad going at all for a beginner.

Despite some initial safety concerns about running after dark, he also got hold of ‘some equipment’ – a head torch and reflective gear – to go on a night run. ‘I was questioning my safety for a min but then i said fugg it.’

Since this inaugural post hard-launching his love of running, Khalifa has gone on to publish more running-centric content – and plenty of big brands, including Nike and Strava, have been among the many hyping up his new hobby. Could Khalifa be the next big running influencer we never saw coming?

Although his smoking-plus-running habit isn’t for everyone, Khalifa has returned to the topic of staying safe while running at night – a huge area of discussion in its own right.

‘Night runs are specifically dangerous, for the obvious,’ he said in one post. ‘Can’t see shit. The sun has a bedtime. And it would be smart if you take that into consideration. Me? I’m new at this shit, so I’m still figuring it all out. Not really thinking about the sun’s bedtime. Just thinking about getting these mile in.’

Khalifa also, it seems, already understands the importance of a shoe rotation – and like any shoe-philic runner, he’s keen to build on this.

‘When you work out with me, you’ve gotta have three pairs of shoes, man,’ he said in another post, pointing to his trainers ‘for lifting’, his running shoes – ‘that explains itself’ – and his slides, because ‘you ain’t gonna want to have regular shoes on after all of that’. A fair point.

‘All those brands go ahead and send me some shit,’ he added. ‘All supplies needed.’

With more running under his belt, and more shoes in his rotation, Khalifa might even be tempted to take on a race at some point soon. We feel that the Wizz Run Series would be a good place for him to start…
