Wakefield Trinity have released a statement in light of their fixture against Salford Red Devils being cancelled, confirming that they were only made aware of that decision “briefly” before statements were shared online.

Salford Red Devils shared their own statement at 5:30 pm on Friday night as they announced that the planned Super League Round 22 fixture against Wakefield would not go ahead.

The Red Devils cited player welfare for the reason behind the cancellation with just two of their possible 17-man squad for the game against Wakefield having Super League experience.

Another statement followed shortly after from the RFL to confirm the cancellation and explain that the outcome will be determined ‘early next week in line with the RFL Operational Rules’.

Incredibly, Wakefield have now claimed that they were only made aware of the game being cancelled just before those statements were published with Trinity seemingly not at the table for the discussions around cancelling the game.

Wakefield Trinity release statement after Salford Red Devils cancellation

A statement released last night saw the club address fans and outline when further updates will come and how fans can be refunded, however, the key line was the revelation that Trinity were not consulted.

That part of the statement read: “We would like to confirm that we were only made aware of Salford’s situation and the plan to cancel the game briefly before the statements, which fans will have seen online, were published.”

Daryl Powell had spoken earlier in the week to the press explaining that there had been no communication and that preparation was as normal.

“We haven’t had any communication either way,” he revealed, adding: “We are just getting on with it. I don’t think we can even worry about that; it’ll come when it comes, if there is a decision. As far as I am aware, we are playing on Sunday.

“Our prep has been great and the boys have trained class today. We’ve done a lot of 13-on-13, really intense and we are in a great place. We are playing Sunday, that’s it.”

Trinity had intended to hand out debuts to Noah High and Neil Tchamambe, however, they’ve now made major changes to their reserves side who are set to face Hull FC.

Eight players have moved from the 21-man squad to face Salford into the reserve team game as they’ve named a ‘star studded lineup’.

Josh Rourke, Cam Scott, Oliver Russell, Ky Rodwell and Seth Nikotemo are the first team players who get game time, whilst reserve players Neil Tchamambe, Noah High and Myles Lawford, all of whom had been named against Salford, will now also feature for the reserves.
