Haydock Park Golf Club is appealing for information after an incident at around 1am yesterday, Sunday, during which it says a large number of ladies’ trophies were taken from the clubhouse.
The theft has shocked members of the Newton-le-Willows based club, who say that many of the trophies are irreplaceable and hold enormous sentimental value.
Dave Haselden, chairman of the club, said: “These trophies were not worth a great deal in value, but there is hundreds of years’ worth of history there.
“Some of these trophies were over 100 years old. They are very sentimental.
“Some of the trophies were donated by the families of past members who have passed away.”
An image shared by the club shows a damaged display cabinet which was smashed during the incident.
In a social media appeal, the club said: “We are devastated to report that our club has been broken into, and a large number of our ladies’ trophies have been stolen.
“These are not just trophies; they represent more than 100 years of history, achievement, and memories.
“Many are irreplaceable and hold enormous sentimental value to generations of members who have represented our club with pride.”
The club is now urging anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or who has information about the break-in to come forward.
A £500 reward is being offered for information leading to the recovery of the trophies and the prosecution of those responsible.
The club added: “Together, we hope we can bring these treasured pieces of our club’s history home.”
A police spokesman has said that no arrests have been made, and that enquiries are ongoing.
